IN BRIEF

The Russian team matches evoked pride, joy and respect from Russians.

MOSCOW, July 12, 2018. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data of a survey devoted to the 2018 World Cup held in Russia from June 14th through July 15th 2018.

Most of Russians (70%) watch the 2018 World Cup; 41% of them watch only the matches involving the Russian team.

More than half of Russians (55%) go on watching the football broadcasts. At the same time, 38% are not going to follow the championship.

Russians felt pride (47%), joy (36%) and respect (35%) when watching the Russian team playing at the World Cup. A further 28% express hope; 21% admiration.

Eight percent of respondents were disappointed with the performance of the Russian team; 5% felt sadness; only 1% felt ashamed.

The percentage of respondents who are going to watch the finals on July 15th is 63%: 61% will follow the game at home or at work; 1% in a café or a bar, 1% at the fan zone or at the stadium in Moscow. According to 23% of respondents, France will be the champion. A further 16% say that the winner will be Croatia.

The VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on July 10, 2018, and involved 1,600 Russians aged 18 and over. The survey was telephone-based and carried out using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
