IN BRIEF

A bad compromise is better than a good lawsuit. We need peace under favorable conditions!

MOSCOW, July 25, 2016.  Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) presents the data of the survey devoted to the reaction of Russians to the Recep Erdogan’s apology for the downing of the Russian warplane over Turkey.

Russians (83%) are aware of the Erdogan’s apology for the downed Su-24, however, Russians (79%) believe that the apology is too late.

Most of respondents (61%) consider that the party that lost most in this conflict is Turkey (since February this year this share has increased to 54%; only 4% name Russia); according to 74%, the normalization of relations should be under more favorable conditions than they were before the conflict. The retaliatory measures taken by Russia are perceived as adequate by 43% of Russians, as insufficient by 42% (31% in 2015), but not as excessive (by 5%).

Seventy-one percent of respondents consider that a number of conditions (paying compensation, punishment of the guilty) should be met for the normalization of the Russia-Turkey relations.

The VCIOM survey was carried out on July 2-3, 2016 in 130 settlements, 46 regions and 9 federal districts of Russia. The sample size involved 1600 persons. The survey was conducted with multi-stage stratified sample based on general rule of walking and quotas at the final selection stage; the sample is representative of the Russian population aged 18 and over, according to sex, age, education, type of settlement.  The margin of error (taking into account the design effect) with 95% confidence interval does not exceed 3.5%. The survey method is community-based formalized face-to-face interviews. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the field work can introduce bias into the survey.
