IN BRIEF

47% of Russian households have a car; half of them possess a car produced in Russia; another half has a foreign car.

MOSCOW, March 5, 2014. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning the results of the annual survey devoted to the Russian automotive industry.

Today almost half of Russians (47%) have a car. Whereas in 2006 the share of respondents who reported to have one or more car in the family was 37%, in 2013 the share of such respondents made up   47%; and then the increase stopped. Today persons who have cars are mainly those aged 25-34 (58%), who have higher education diplomas (58%), who live in Moscow and St. Petersburg (65%), and who have high income (59%). At the same time, one – third of Russians (36%) with low income also have a car.

Russians equally purchase domestic and foreign cars. Fifty-one percent of respondents drive cars produced in Russia (this share has decreased by 1.5 times over ten years – from 75% in 2006); 52% car owners drive foreign cars (this share has doubled compared to 2006 – 27%). Those who have domestic cars are basically elderly respondents (70%), rural area residents (67%), or those who have low income (58%). Young Russians (61% of 25-34-year-old persons), residents of Moscow and St.Petersburg (74%), and respondents with high level of income (71%) prefer foreign cars. Three-thirds of respondents (75%) drive used cars produced more than three years ago; and 28% use recently produced cars.

Most of Russians (81%) are not planning to purchase a car (this share has stayed at high level over several years). Only 13% of Russians report that they would like to buy a car; 8% of them would like to do that within two or three years. Those who want to buy a car are students (23%) and housewives (25%); those who least interested in it are elderly respondents (5%).

The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted on February 22-23, 2014. 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 communities in 42 regions of Russia. Data are weighted by gender, age, education, working status and type of settlement. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
