IN BRIEF

The 1993 Crisis was caused by the split within the ruling elite.

MOSCOW, October 2, 2013. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning how Russians assess today the Constitutional Crisis of 1993; whether the use of force during this conflict was justified, or not.

Most of Russians are aware of the confrontation between the president Yelltsin and the parliament headed by Khasbulatov resulted in unrest (80%): 34% are well aware, 46% - heard something. sixteen percent of respondents learned for the first time about that.

Those who are well informed are elderly respondents (54%).  Most of those who are poorly informed are Russians aged 18-24- (43%).

According to 22% of respondents, the crisis resulted from the divergence of opinion between the parliament and the president. Less Russians (19%) point out the fight between supporters of democratic values and vestiges of the soviet system. Those who blame circumstances are in the minority (5%).
