More than half of Russians consider that the Notre Dame fire was caused by an accident.
MOSCOW, April 23, 2019. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the findings of a study describing what Russians think about the fire at Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral.
An absolute majority of Russians (92%) know that on April 15 a fire took place in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
More than half of respondents (56%) think the fire was caused by an accident. They are opposed by 26% of Russians saying that it was likely arson; they are mainly young respondents (18-24) - 38%.
According to every second respondent (51%), Russia should help France in restoring the Cathedral; 63% of elder respodnents share this stance. On the contrary, 44% of respondents believe that there is no need to help France in restoration works; those who think so are mainly Russians aged 25-34 (56%) and residents of million cities (54%).
VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on April 20, 2019. The survey involved 1,600 Russians aged 18 and over. The survey was telephone-based and was carried out using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
