As before, Russians consider Belarus and Kazakhstan to be the most successful CIS countries and Russia’s key partners.
MOSCOW, December 19, 2016. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing how Russians assess the success of the CIS countries; which country is regarded as Russia’s partner; in what country the rights of the Russian-speaking population are respected the most; which CIS leader Russians trust the most.
Russians also consider Belarus (66%) and Kazakhstan (55%) to be Russia’s main partners internationally. They are followed by Armenia (16%; 5% in 2013), Uzbekistan (10%; 3% in 2014-2015), and Azerbaijan (8%), and others.Most of Russians like and support Belarus and Kazakhstan more than any other CIS country: Belarus is mentioned by 68%; and Kazakhstan – by 51%. Countries that have seen an upward trend are Armenia (from 9% in 2014 to 16% in 2016), Uzbekistan (from 3% in 2014-2015 to 14% in 2016) and Tajikistan (from 1% in 2015 to 7% in 2016).
Asked about the country that respects the rights of the Russian-speaking population the most, most of respondents also cite Belarus (69%; 27% in 2010) and Kazakhstan (38%; 18% in 2013). Other CIS countries are less mentioned: Armenia (13%), Ukraine (6%), Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Moldavia, Uzbekistan (5%, per each country), Georgia, Tajikistan (4% per each country), and Turkmenistan (2%).
Presidents of Belarus and Kazakhstan are at the top of the CIS trustworthy leaders’ ranking: Aleksandr Lukashenko (65%), Nursultan Nazarbaev (54%; a significant increase from 45% over a year; another significant increase from 31% in 2012). The percentage of Russians who trust other CIS leaders vary between 2% and 11%; Ilham Aliyev – 11%; Serzh Sargsyan – 8%; Shavkat Mirziyoyev– 6%; Almazbek Atambaev and Igor Dodon – 5% (for each); Gurbanguli Berdymuhamedov and Emomali Rahmon – 4% (for each); Georgy Margvelashvili – 3%; Petro Poroshenko – 2%.
The VCIOM survey was commissioned by the CROS Company and conducted on December 10-11, 2016, using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of telephone numbers operating in Russia, and involved 1600 respondents. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the field work can introduce bias into the survey.
