IN BRIEF

More and more Russians do sports and keep track of their nutrition.

MOSCOW, May 10 2012. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing how many Russians do sports and keep track of what they eat.

In varying degrees, 47% of Russians do sports (in 2008– 44%): 13% - regularly, 18% - from time to time, 17% - occasionally. The share of respondents who do sports activities regularly is the highest among men (17%), youth (29%), and respondents with high level of education (17%). The share of those who report they do not do sports is 52%.

Most of Russians, as before, do sports at home (53%).  The second popular place for that is stadiums, arenas and gyms (25%). The share of those who go to sports clubs and fitness centers is the lowest (9% for each).

Russians put more and more attention to what they eat: the share of those who keep track of that has increased from 44 to 50% over the recent four years: 5% are on a diet prescribed by the doctor; 10% choose their own diet, 35% try to eat only healthy food. Twenty-seven percent of Russians report that they eat what they want because they do not have problems with their health. The share of those who do not have an opportunity to think about the quality of food is decreasing (from 29 to 19%). Generally, women more often than men restrict what they eat (60% against 39, respectively).

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted April 14-15, 2012. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 138 sampling points in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
